The following entry was written by Riverton Civil Rights Team 5th grade members:
Later on this fall, Riverton Elementary Civil Right’s Team will be going to Keely's Banquet Center to take part in training led by Brandon Baldwin from the State of Maine Attorney Generals Office. There will be over 90 students from schools all over Maine. In the past we were the only elementary team from Portland and the only school that had members from different countries. Mr. Baldwin was will be teaching us about anti-bias behavior in situations that can affect students based on their gender, race, religion and other differences. Wait! Did we say differences? Guess what we found out?! - that it doesn’t matter what you are- It matters WHO you are, and what kind of citizen of the world you are. We learned that it is ok and important to notice our differences, and that they are something to be celebrated, and not something to be ashamed of. We felt special, proud and honored to represent our school and our countries. It changed our lives! Our motto is now:
Knowledge, Empathy, and Action turn < and > into =
