Riverton Elementary School has a strong environmental club program. CHEERS (Cultures Helping Everyone’s Environment at Riverton School) has been sponsoring projects and helping our school for over 5 years now. Our club has members in grades 3-5. The 5th grade division has already helped with bulletin boards, organizing the reading room, making new bulletin boards out of wood and painting them for art work display. We also raise praying mantis (about 1200 a year) to help our area with natural pesticide. We have made and installed bird and bat houses on our school property. Members of the environmental club researched and are ready to develop an environmentally friendly desk cleaner. Our goal is to reduce the number of colds and flu absences by keeping things sanitized. We continue to have students who help with lunch recycling. Last year we were named the 2013 Ecomaine Recycling Sustainability Award Winners. Our biggest project this year is building a greenhouse out of recycled 2 liter soda bottles! Harvard Pilgrim has chosen our school to help with a team of adults and supplies. Building will take place in a couple of weeks so keep looking for updates. What an honor!!! Thanks, Ms V!
